RP Systems LLC's Diagnostic Methodology:

Diagnosis Process for Linear and Switch-Mode Power Supplies: We will begin

Check the AC input and ensure the transformer is operational. Measure the input and output voltage to verify they're within the specified range. If the output voltage is unstable, it may indicate issues with the voltage regulator or voltage reference.

Check for excessive ripple voltage, possibly due to a faulty rectifier, diode bridge, or a degraded filter capacitor. An oscilloscope inspects the waveform and detects abnormal noise reduction or parasitic oscillation.

If the power supply is overheating, investigate thermal management issues, ensuring the heat sink is adequately sized and there's no thermal shutdown. Also, the series pass transistor and biasing conditions must be evaluated to ensure they function correctly.

For switch-mode supplies, monitor the bandwidth and stability of the feedback loop, looking for any issues in the closed-loop and open-loop configurations.

When load fluctuations cause anomalies, assess the load transient response. Ensure protection mechanisms, like overload protection, short circuit protection, and crowbar protection, are active and responsive.

Verify the load regulation, line regulation, and dropout voltage in output issues. Should you find any abnormalities, delve deeper into the schematic to identify potential faulty components.
